Ground was first broken at Hartenberg in 1692, when friends Cunraad Boin and Christoffel Esterhuizzen planted the first vines, and over the years has changed hands until purchased by the Mackenzies. Since 2000, the vineyards have been pesticide free, and cattle were introduced in 2017 to enhance soil health while grazing. In 2023, Hartenberg was named a World Wildlife Fund Conservation champion for its regenerative viticulture and preservation of critically endangered ecosystems.

Wines produced include Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Riesling, Riesling Noble Late Harvest, Rosé, and selected blends.

Visitors can enjoy guided wine tastings, explore Hartenberg’s underground cellar, or enjoy seasonal lunches from Wednesday to Sunday. Picnic platters are available from Thursday to Sunday. Booking is essential.
