Welcome to Kanonkop, one of the Western Cape’s standout wineries. Tucked on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg, just outside Stellenbosch, this estate sits in the heart of the Cape Winelands. The setting is quintessentially South African: red-tiled roofs, rugged granite walls, and vines stretching across rolling hills with sweeping views over vineyards and valley below.

Kanonkop is renowned for its bold, age-worthy reds, especially Pinotage and Bordeaux-style blends. Their Paul Sauer is a well-known flagship, and the estate consistently earns praise for its Pinotage. If you love red wines, you’ll want to sample a few of these stars in a relaxed tasting that captures the estate’s warmth and character.

To make the most of your visit, opt for a tasting in the tasting room and, if possible, a guided cellar tour to get a peek behind the scenes at the winemaking process. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the views from the terrace or picnic spots (when available) make a perfect backdrop for sipping with the aroma of wine in the air.

Plan a little time to explore the surrounding area as well. Kanonkop is part of the Stellenbosch wine route, so you can easily combine it with neighboring estates. It’s a short drive from Cape Town and about 15 minutes from central Stellenbosch. Best times to visit are spring, when the hills are lush, or during the harvest season for a lively, vineyard-dusty atmosphere. Dress comfortably, bring a jacket for the breeze, and book tastings in advance to secure your spot.
